Latest link in Wynyard Quarter development gets underway

Preliminary work is to begin on the construction of the Wynyard Crossing – an interim pedestrian and cycling bridge over the Viaduct Harbour.

Funded by Auckland City Council, Auckland Regional Holdings and NZTA, this link between the eastern Viaduct and new Wynyard Quarter development has always been an important part of opening up the CBD waterfront.

The removal of the Team New Zealand building from Halsey Street commences this week. It will take four to six weeks to complete and will make way for a plaza, the bridge’s landing point on the Wynyard Quarter side.

Team New Zealand is moving next door into the old Alinghi base and CEO, Grant Dalton, says the move will not upset the team’s plans to take part in the next America's Cup in 2013.

Work will begin in late October on construction of the new bridge, which has been designed to ensure it is good for boaties, pedestrians and cyclists, and has minimal impact on the area.

The development of the Wynyard Quarter area is already well underway, set to provide an exciting mix of generous public spaces, access to the water’s edge, restaurants, bars, cafés, casual eateries and public promenades in time for Rugby World Cup 2011.

The Wynyard Crossing is due to be completed by mid-next year.
