UPDATE - Search for missing helicopter resumes
The search for a missing
helicopter and its two occupants has resumed this morning,
with eye witness reports helpings to focus search efforts.
The Rescue Coordination Centre New Zealand (RCCNZ) is
coordinating three helicopters and a number of other
resources including Coastguard and police in the search,
which started again daybreak today.
Reports from local residents of sightings of a helicopter have helped RCCNZ and searchers on the ground to narrow their focus from the original search area of more than 1000 square kilometres.
The missing helicopter, a Robinson R22 with a pilot and instructor on board, was reported missing yesterday (Thursday 14 October) just after 2pm in the Awarua area, near Invercargill. There had been no contact with the helicopter since 1.30pm.
Helicopters, Coastguard air patrol and vessels from Bluff and Riverton have been working with police and RCCNZ since immediately after the helicopter was reported missing. Helicopters continued to search after nightfall using night vision equipment.
Weather in the area is calm and fine, ideal conditions for the search, RCCNZ Search and Rescue Watch Leader John Dickson says.
