Search on for next year’s youth councillors
ROTORUA 20.10.10: Rotorua District Council (RDC) is on the look-out for 16 diverse young people to join the 2011 Rotorua District Youth Council.
RDC youth projects officer Jill Campbell says the group of future leaders, aged between 13 and 18, brings together a mix of ethnicity, geographic location, gender and experience, and aims to encourage youth participation in the community.
“The role of a youth councillor is varied and interesting, and provides a good foundation for project management, policy making, and leadership responsibilities.
“Youth councillors are expected to be able to problem solve, work well in a team, have an interest in civic affairs, discuss issues affecting Rotorua's young people, be good listeners, and have a network of peers to share information with.
“While it’s a challenging position, it’s very rewarding and offers many opportunities to actively promote a Rotorua youth viewpoint on local and national issues. There’s also the bonus of making valuable networks and friendships.”
A number of Rotorua’s youth councillors attended the Youth in Local Government Conference in Porirua this year and were involved in consultation on raising New Zealand’s driving age, RDC's annual plan, and planning Youth Week and Music Month.
Application forms are available from schools, Rotorua District Library, online from www.rdc.govt.nz, www.rotaz.co.nz, or by contacting Jill Campbell at Rotorua District Council on 07 351 8180.
The last day for youth council applications is Friday 5 November 2010.
