Town Hall to become people’s place
Town Hall to become people’s place
Auckland Mayor Len Brown is to investigate opening the Auckland Town Hall , to improve access to the centre of Auckland civic life.
“I’ll be talking to the council’s property and heritage officers to see how we can better welcome Aucklanders and visitors into this magnificent building.”
Currently, the entrances to the council chambers and mayor’s office are separate to those for the entertainment venues, the Great Hall and the Concert Chamber. There is also limited disability access to the civic section of the town hall.
Mayor Brown would like to see the main grand entrances give access to both areas of the town hall, to improve the sense of welcome to visitors to the building, whether they are attending a council meeting or a concert.
“If we want to be an open and accessible council, we need to make this building open and accessible.
“This is a wonderful building with a rich heritage. I want to see if we can if we can simply and efficiently reconfigure parts of it, while respecting its historical integrity, to make it work better for the people of Auckland,” says Len Brown.
