Department of Corrections Chief Executive Barry Matthews has confirmed that a Rimutaka Prison tutor was arrested and charged under the Misuse of Drugs Act, and appeared in Court yesterday.
He was charged with possession of cannabis for supply and possession of methamphetamine for supply.
“The arrest and charge was the result of the collaboration between Rimutaka Prison, the Department’s Professional Standards Unit and Police after suspicions were raised about the Department employee,” Mr Matthews said.
The Professional Standards Unit was
established in 2007. It is staffed by investigators with
experience in managing criminal and corruption
investigations. The purpose of this group is to undertake
proactive or reactive investigations of allegations or
instances of suspected corrupt activities, either prior to,
or together with, any Police investigation.
“Rimutaka Prison is New Zealand's largest prison, employing around 570 staff, and the vast majority do their job with honesty and integrity. Like any employer we are highly disappointed if a staff member is found to have acted dishonestly.
“As the matter is now before the courts it would be inappropriate to comment further,” Mr Matthews said.
