Take safety quiz at night market to win prizes

Take safety quiz at  night market to win prizes

ROTORUA 29.11.10:

Rotorua community safety group, Treasure Rotorua, is encouraging people to stay safe this summer and offering rewards to those who complete a simple safety quiz at the city’s popular market during next month.

People who front up to test their safety knowledge at the Rotorua Night Market during December are in to win some fantastic prizes.

Rotorua District Council community safety projects officer Amy Royston says experts will also be on hand to chat about how people can stay safe over summer.

“We want people to think about their safety while spending time at home, with whanau, when in the water, on the road, and around fire.”

Ms Royston says six people died by drowning in the Rotorua district between 2004 and 2008; four people were seriously injured in fires between 2004 and 2008; and there are over 700 road traffic crashes in the Rotorua district every year.

“The good news is that many injuries can be prevented.

“Simple things to keep your family safe this summer include continually watching while cooking, never leaving barbeques unattended, turning off Christmas lights before going to bed, avoiding use of candles in a caravan or tent, having a correct-fitting life jacket for everyone on boats, always swimming between the flags at the beach, and having non-alcoholic drinks available for party guests.

“People should also remember if they feel stressed or worried, it’s OK to ask for help.”

Treasure Rotorua is a partnership of Rotorua District Council, ACC, Police, Lakes District Health Board, Work & Income, Toi Te Ora Public Health, Neighbourhood Support, Te Waiariki Purea Trust and local iwi.
