Special train will run tomorrow to Pike River memorial

Wednesday December 1, 2010 - The Rail and Maritime Transport Union (RMTU) is pleased to partner with Kiwirail to enable a special train service from Christchurch for tomorrow’s memorial for the 29 workers killed at Pike River mine.

“This initiative was led by our West Coast RMTU delegates. They worked closely with the Pike River miners at the coal load sites, and like all others were devastated by the mine tragedy,” said Wayne Butson, RMTU General Secretary.

“They wanted a way to allow other members of our union and members of the public from Christchurch to attend tomorrow’s memorial service.”

“We were pleased with KiwiRail’s support for this initiative and we have compiled a volunteer crew to run the service.”

Proceeds from the service will go to the Pike River Miners Relief Fund, he said.

The train departs Christchurch at 8.15 tomorrow morning, returning at 9.15pm.
