Arrest for Anzac Day assault on taxi driver

Johnsonville man arrested for Anzac Day assault on taxi driver

Wellington Police have arrested and charged a 21 year old man in connection with an assault of a taxi driver earlier this year.

The Johnsonville man faces one charge of injuring with intent to rob and has appeared in the Wellington District Court this afternoon. He has been remanded on bail with strict conditions to reappear on 22 December 2010.

Detective Sergeant Mike Priston of the Wellington CIB says around 2:40am on the morning of Anzac Day (25 April 2010), it's alleged two males caught a taxi from Johnsonville Road to Woodland Road, which was a short drive away.

"Police allege the taxi driver was then assaulted and attempts were made to steal cash from the driver. As the driver was getting assaulted he lost control of his vehicle and crashed. He was treated for injuries at the scene."

Mike Priston says serious assaults on taxi drivers will not be tolerated in our city and we take any incidents of this nature extremely seriously.

Enquiries into this incident continue.
