Tauranga mayor joins Rotorua airport board

ROTORUA 16.12.10

Tauranga mayor Stuart Crosby has been appointed to the board of Rotorua Regional Airport Ltd, the company running Rotorua International Airport.

The appointment was confirmed at a meeting last night of the Rotorua District Council (RDC) following a recommendation from the airport's board of directors.

Announcing Mr Crosby's appointment Rotorua mayor Kevin Winters said he was particularly pleased that his Tauranga counterpart was able to accept a position on the airport board.

"Clearly the airport is a truly regional facility and it's being utilised by people from throughout the whole Bay of Plenty. Numbers have been increasing at a very encouraging rate since the airport gained international status 12 months when Air new Zealand started a twice weekly direct trans-Tasman service from Sydney.

"Stuart has the confidence and respect of our council and of the airport company. We welcome his input as a director and we look forward to the different perspective he will bring to the boardroom from his in-depth knowledge of Tauranga and the Western Bay of Plenty.

"The airport company has bold aspirations for further developing the airport complex as a successful business, and as a catalyst for boosting tourism and economic growth for the whole region. There are exciting opportunities ahead for our tourism sector and for the economies of the Bay of Plenty.

Mr Crosby said he saw his appointment as a chance to create closer ties between Tauranga and the Western Bay of Plenty, with Rotorua International Airport.
