ASB Community Trust takes a long term view of Future Leaders
YWCA Auckland will receive $140,000 per year for the next four years to support its young women’s leadership and mentoring programme; Future Leaders.
With this multi-year funding” says Hilary Sumpter, the CEO of the YWCA Auckland, “We are able to take on 48 young women this year knowing that they will be fully funded for the four years that they are with us. This is a brilliant initiative; it’s about funding to succeed and demonstrates how funders can work proactively with their grant recipients.” The ASB Community Trust’s Youth Health and Development Fund is a new and very different way of working with the community. This fund will only support seven organisations, but fund them well. Support can include multi-year funding, as well as project development and evaluation planning.
The fund is for community organisations delivering initiatives to improve health and social outcomes for young people aged 12-24. These initiatives will focus on youth development, health promotion and prevention.
The ASB Community Trust has supported the YWCA Future Leaders programme since its inception in 2002. This four year mentoring programme is the only mentoring programme which focuses solely on young women in a long-term intervention.
“We take on these students knowing that we will have to continue our fundraising to keep them on the programme,” says Hilary “this expanded financial support from the ASB Community Trust is invaluable and our staff are benefiting from the planning and evaluation work we are doing together.”
