Latest aftershocks is another “new event”
“The aftershocks of today, led by the magnitude 5.1 one early this morning, will be treated by EQC as a new event for insurance purposes,” the chief executive of the Earthquake Commission, Ian Simpson, said today.
“This adds to the list of what we are treating as separate events. These are the 7.1 earthquake on 4 September, the 5.0 aftershock on 19 October, the 4.9 on 14 November, and the 4.9 on Boxing Day.
“As at mid-afternoon today, we had received 53 claims for damage from the latest aftershocks.
“Claims appear so far to be for relatively minor damage such as some cracking of interior and exterior walls and the exacerbation of existing damage.
“We received 157,247 claims for 4 September and 2,849 for 19 October. The three month deadlines for claims for these events has now passed. As of yesterday, we had received 2,016 for 14 November and 8,871 for Boxing Day. That is a total of 170,983,” Mr Simpson concluded.
