Third Sunday of the Month at Motat

If you’re looking for something to entertain the kids on a quiet Sunday, head down to MOTAT for ‘Third Sunday of the Month’.

On Sunday 20 February visitors can enjoy an endless array of activities on both MOTAT sites and take a ride on the latest addition to MOTAT’s tramway fleet, Double Decker Tram No.47. Kids will love the other exciting activities MOTAT has on offer including a yummy stop-off at the MOTAT lollymaker and thrilling steam train rides.

This 1906 Wellington Double Decker tram named ‘Big Ben’ is one of six bogie double-deckers and stands today as one of only two operating double decker trams in New Zealand.

‘Big Ben’ had its first test run in Wellington way back in 1907. It was used as a much-loved form of transport by Wellingtonians until 1954, when it was withdrawn from passenger service and was almost taken to the scrap heap.

But ‘Big Ben’ survived and was put back on the tracks for its last stint as a publicly used tram. In 1962 it was brought up to Auckland, just prior to the Wellington trams system closure in 1964.

Lovingly restored by MOTAT volunteers, today ‘Big Ben’ calls MOTAT home. Visitors are encouraged to come along and take a ride on this fantastic tram and learn all about the history of MOTAT’s tramway fleet.

Sunday 20 February 2011

Location
MOTAT, Great North Road & Meola Road, Western Springs.

A return tram ride is FREE with MOTAT entry. Off the street tram fares are family pass $5, adult one way $1, adult return $2, child one way 50 cents, child return $1, under 5 years free.

VOYAGER1 ADVENTURE

As part of MOTAT’s summer offering, take an out of this world trip on the Voyager1 virtual reality simulator!

Voyager1 has three thrilling journeys on show, including ‘Journey to the Centre of the Earth’, ‘Alien Safari’ and ‘Journey to Eden’.

‘Journey to the Centre of the Earth’ will take you deep into the belly of the earth while ‘Journey to Eden’ will allow you to experience Aotearoa as you’ve never seen it before.

Roam the surface of uninhabited planets, search out strange creatures, travel through tunnels, ice caves, worm holes and much more in the ‘Alien Safari’ ride.

Created by Dennis Hyde and his team at New Zealand’s own Space Dome Technologies, Voyager1 gives an intense virtual reality experience on par with international simulators such as those found in Hollywood theme parks.
