Te Rūnanga o Ōtākou is to host to this year’s Ngai Tahu Treaty of Waitangi Day

Commemoration festivities at Ōtākou Marae, Sunday 6 February.

Festivities start at 10am and feature traditional and contemporary cultural performances (including Pacific Island practitioners), activities for children and a detailed history plus future plans for the marae.

Members of the public are welcome to attend.

The theme of this year's festival is "kua takoto te manuka - the leaves of the manuka tree have been laid down".

Chairman of Ōtākou Rūnanga Edward Ellison says the theme of the Ngāi Tahu Treaty Festival symbolises the challenge the Treaty of Waitangi presents to Māori and the choices that lie ahead.

“It is an opportunity to take a fresh look at relationships and to share ideas with the Treaty Partners in a relaxed atmosphere,” says Edward Ellison.

Each year the three Rūnanga where the Treaty was signed in 1840, take turns to host the Te Waipounamu Treaty Festival.
