Supervision of children around water - a top priority
WaterSafe Auckland wants to remind parents and caregivers of the importance of adult supervision of children in and around water, following a spate of preschool drownings.
"Drowning is still the second leading unintentional killer of children in New Zealand and to have such a high number already this year is alarming," says Teresa Stanley, WaterSafe Auckland's Business Manager, "pools and beaches can be a great source of fun for children but can also be a deadly hazard and adequate adult supervision must be given top priority."
Supervising means more than just watching. It involves constantly watching the children, avoiding distractions such as texting or reading, and being able to respond quickly if required. Being a suitable distance from children in the water is also important, with younger children and non-swimmers kept within arm's reach.
In an effort to prevent further tragedies WaterSafe Auckland offers the following advice:
* Always ensure there is a designated adult to actively supervise children anywhere near water, especially at social gatherings.
* A supervisor must be a responsible, capable adult or caregiver over the age of 16 years.
* Never over-estimate your child's ability to cope in the open-water environment even if they have had swimming lessons.
* Parents and caregivers are responsible for their children at beaches or pools even if lifeguards are present.
* Be aware of your Council compliance responsibility to keep your pool safer and remember this also includes inflatable swimming and spa pools.
* Know child and infant CPR.
