Workshops helping newcomers prepare for employment
ROTORUA 18.02.11: Rotorua District Council (RDC) is running a series of free workshops next month to help newcomers to Rotorua prepare and apply for jobs in the community.
RDC’s Settlement Support Office is offering three free workshops for migrants including ‘Writing a Kiwi-style CV and Covering Letter,’ ‘Employment Panel’ and ‘Tips for a Job Interview and How to Gain Skills & Experience for the NZ Workplace.’
RDC Settlement Support coordinator Heather McAllister says a number of local careers consultants and human resource personnel will be presenting at the workshops which are aimed at helping newcomers to enter the local workforce.
“The workshops are an excellent opportunity for local migrants to get a better understanding of what is required when applying for jobs in New Zealand. A lot of newcomers have the skills, qualifications and experience to become valuable employees but are uncomfortable with the job seeking process as it may differ from their homelands.
“Gaining employment is an important undertaking to help migrants settle comfortably in any city and in Rotorua we are keen to do all we can to help make this happen.”
On Tuesday 15 March from 10.30am to12.30pm is the first workshop on ‘Writing a Kiwi-style CV and Covering Letter’. This is a practical computer based workshop and is limited to 10 people.
On Wednesday 16 March from 11am to 12.30pm is the second workshop ‘Tips for a Job Interview and How to Gain Skills & Experience for the NZ Workplace’. Participants will find out how to improve their interview skills and obtain experience for the New Zealand workplace.
‘Employment Panel’ is the subject of the third workshop and this takes place on Friday 18 March from 10.30am to 12 noon, and concentrates on the recruitment process from an employer's perspective. The panel will be from a range of local employers and is an opportunity for newcomers to meet and ask questions of people used to employing staff.
To register for any of the workshops contact Heather McAllister at Rotorua District Council on 07 351 7054 or email ssnzrotorua@rdc.govt.nz .
