Free Parking for Shoppers in Porirua to Remain

Free Parking for Shoppers in Porirua to Remain

Recent amendments to the bylaw that controls parking activities in Porirua City will not affect free parking for shoppers and visitors to the city, says Mayor Nick Leggett.

Council adopted the bylaw amendment in response to requests by local businesses and city workers for more parking options within the CBD.

"Free parking in Porirua for shoppers and short term parkers has not changed. What the bylaw amendment gives us is the opportunity to provide convenient long term parking at minimal cost for workers and retailers while at the same time allowing free short term car parks for shoppers and visitors to the city."

The amendments to bylaw Part 16 Traffic relate to coupon and parking meter areas and prohibited times on roads among other things.

"Areas of the city centre where long term coupon car parking could be introduced are on Hagley Street in the old Challenge petrol station site and the car park in front of the Porirua Police Station."

Long term free car parking is still available on many surrounding streets that are within a few minutes walk of the CBD and these are not affected at this time.
