New Volunteer Award Helps Migrants
Connect With Community
A new programme that encourages community participation and learning for migrants is being launched in Porirua this month.
Settlement Support Porirua in partnership with the Porirua Central Citizens Advice Bureau and Volunteer Porirua will launch the Volunteer Connect Award in Porirua on Friday 18 March 2011 at the Settlement Support offices on Hagley Street.
The Volunteer Connect Award has been running in Wellington for six months and more recently in the Hutt Valley.
Everyone who registers is given a Volunteer Connect Card, similar to the coffee card concept, earns points for involvement in activities, including volunteering and attending seminars and workshops. When 100 points are accumulated, the volunteer will receive a Certificate of Recognition.
"The goal of the programme is to provide newcomers with an opportunity to connect with communities in the Wellington region through participating in various activities," says Porirua Settlement Support coordinator Annette Woods.
"Being familiar with and understanding the local
environment will ensure newcomers feel they belong, and are
able to contribute meaningfully to our diverse community.
The programme will also build their confidence and knowledge
about the Wellington region, sense of belonging and
employability - all critical factors for successful
settlement."
