Self-evacuees to Manawatu – Wanganui region

28 February 2011

Self-evacuees to Manawatu – Wanganui region

Any Christchurch people who have self-evacuated to the Manawatu - Wanganui Region after the earthquake and have not yet registered through Red Cross are being asked to call the 0800 REDCROSS line (0800733276) to advise of their situation.

This will greatly assist those currently managing the missing and found personnel lists.

It is also important that self evacuees ensure that their next of kin or anyone who may have concerns as to their whereabouts are made aware of their location.

Civil Defence Emergency Management Group Controller Ged Shirley said “we are keen to have a clear picture of the numbers who have come to our region to stay with family and friends, or in other accommodation because it is important people coming to the region get the support they need”.

Mr Shirley urged evacuees to make use of the Government’s helpline, 0800 779 997, or to visit a local Work and Income service centre in the region for advice on financial assistance available.

At this stage no evacuees have been formally sent to the region however we are aware of some that have arrived under their own arrangements.

Mr Shirley reiterated that new centralised national arrangements were in place for people wanting to make offers of free accommodation to those needing to leave Christchurch following the earthquake.

People within the region wanting to make such offers can now call 0800 435 700 or visit www.housinghelp.govt.nz.
