SDC to Collect Donations for Earthquake Relief Fund

Stratford District Council will act as a collection point for members of the public wanting to make cash donations to aid those affected by the Christchurch earthquake.

District Mayor, Neil Volzke, said the appeal would run for as long as it is needed.

People can make their donations at the council’s administration building, 61-63 Miranda Street, Stratford.

Acting Chief Executive Mike Avery says, “The opportunity for those in the district to donate locally is often easier than getting involved with national appeals and with news of scams operating people can feel more comfortable knowing their money will be going straight to the cause”.

“I think it is important that the local community is given the opportunity to help,” he said.

For those not from or directly involved with people from Christchurch comes a feeling of “helplessness”, not being able to reach out and lend a hand. The collection box at council gives people the opportunity to truly help.

Like most other councils Stratford District Council will continue to stand by and help in anyway when asked.

Operations Manager, John Jones has already been deployed to Christchurch to assist with search and rescue operations, and Building Control Officer, John Richmond, is also in Christchurch assisting with building assessments.

“Christchurch will be in rescue and recovery mode for weeks to come and they know that if help is needed all councils in the Country will put their hand up”.

“It is a matter of being there when needed”, says Mayor Volzke.
