Porirua's Welcome Signs Celebrate City's Success

Porirua's Welcome Signs Celebrate City's Success

Porirua City's high profile welcome signs are about to be redecorated with a new image that celebrates the city's wins at the 2010 International Liveable Communities Awards.

"The International Liveable Communities Awards are the world's only awards recognising excellence in the sustainable development of cities – they're sort of like the Olympics for cities and communities," says Porirua Mayor Nick Leggett.

At the 2010 Awards, Porirua City was recognised with three of the top awards - the only one of the 43 city finalists to do so.

These prestigious awards are judged by international panels of experts and are endorsed by the United Nations Environment Programme.

The Porirua community was singled out with special recognition as a world leader for the way it works together and makes good things happen for its people and environment.

"We've always known that Porirua is a fantastic city in which to live – now that it's been officially recognised we want to make sure everyone who visits our city knows it too," says Mayor Leggett. Porirua City has four Welcome signs: The southern boundary with Wellington City at Tawa on State Highway 1 and Kenepuru Drive; the eastern boundary with the Hutt Valley on State Highway 58 near the top of Haywards Hill; and the northernmost boundary with Kapiti Coast on State Highway 1, just south of Fishermans Table restaurant at Paekakariki. The new signs will be in place for the next six months and installation will be completed by Thursday 10 March. ………………………………………………………………………………… ends
