Workshop For Settlers Driving In New Zealand

WORKSHOP FOR SETTLERS DRIVING IN NEW ZEALAND

Settlement Support Porirua is again running its popular workshop What's different about driving in New Zealand for newcomers to New Zealand.

Settlement Support Coordinator Annette Woods says driving is a great way to see New Zealand's beautiful countryside as well as convenient to get around town.

"But there are a few things that newcomers may not be used to when driving in New Zealand – like driving on the left hand side of the road and the unique give way rule at intersections. We also have some hilly, narrow and winding roads that mean a car journey may take longer than expected if you are used to motorways or freeways," she says.

Council Road Safety coordinator Mark Kairua will run the 45 minute workshop on Thursday 24 March at 10am. It will be held in the lecture theatre at Whitireia Community Polytechnic (right of the main car park, Entrance One).

Mark uses pictures to explain some of the information so this seminar is suitable for people with English as a second language.

Annette says people who have a current overseas driver licence or international driving permit, can drive in New Zealand for a maximum period of 12 months from the date you arrive.

"However, after one year they must gain a New Zealand driver's licence. This will involve passing a theory test and, depending on the country they have come from, passing a practical driving test as well."

Forms to apply for an overseas driving licence conversion are available from New Zealand Transport Agency driver licence agencies. Usually it is the Automobile Association office. Also check www.nzta.govt.nz to find local driver licensing agencies.
