New Zealand’s neighbours in the South Pacific pay a visit to Auckland
Thursday 10 March 2011
La Glorieuse, a French patrol boat based in Noumea, New Caledonia, will stop over in Auckland from 12 to 16 March.
Lieutenant Commander Nicolas du Chéné, who has been the vessel’s commanding officer since 23 July 2010, will open the doors of the French Navy ship to the Auckland public on Sunday 13 March from 9.00 am to 11.00 am, and 2.00 pm to 5.00pm. Don’t miss this opportunity to gain a rare insight into life on board a naval frigate!
Aucklanders will not be the only visitors to La Glorieuse during its time in the City of Sails. The ship will also host dignitaries and Embassy contacts invited to attend an official lunch and cocktail party aboard the ships quarters.
The main function of La Glorieuse is to carry out maritime surveillance of New Caledonia and Wallis and Futuna’s Exclusive Economic Zones. However, its duties are not limited to this responsibility. The frigate also takes part in cooperation missions with multi-national forces, including New Zealand, to maintain a secure and peaceful environment in the South Pacific. It also participates in search and rescue missions, assists with inter-island transportation and plays a large role in the combat against illegal fishing, drug smuggling and pollution within the region.
Attached please find Lieutenant Commander Nicolas du Chéné’s biography and further information regarding La Glorieuse.
