Police Association applauds Nelson gang bust

The Police Association today congratulated Police on “knocking over” the Nelson-based Red Devils organised crime group.

“The Red Devils are a puppet gang of the Hells Angels, one of the biggest international organised crime groups. Nobody should be under any illusions: the Red Devils, like every other motorcycle gang in the country, exist solely to make money from organised criminal enterprise,” President Greg O’Connor said.

“Gangs today are not just guys on bikes with patched leathers and tattoos. They are sophisticated criminal businesses, supported by networks of front companies, trusts, lawyers, accountants and business advisers.

“They are not just involved in making, importing and dealing methamphetamine and other drugs. Gangs are involved anywhere and everywhere there is money to be made from organised crime, including fraud, scams, illegal firearms, and import and export of stolen vehicles and other goods. Their money laundering activity expands their sphere of influence even wider, into legitimate industries such as property, hospitality, and finance.

“Police should be congratulated on knocking over the Red Devils before they established a strong foothold for the Hells Angels in the top of the South Island.

“However, every community in New Zealand also needs to take a hard look at their local bikie gang. Don’t be fooled, and don’t buy into their ‘charity work’ and other PR – the gangs are simply fronts for serious organised crime and drug dealing,” Mr O’Connor said.
