Popular family day out returns to Turangi
Turangi locals will have an opportunity to learn about one of New Zealand’s iconic birds as the popular Whio Family Day returns to the Tongariro Trout Centre this Saturday, March 19.
Numbers of Whio or native blue duck are dangerously low. With less than 3000 of the species left, the Department of Conservation, New Zealand Forest and Bird, Genesis Energy and the Central North Island Blue Duck Trust join forces every March to raise awareness of the native Whio.
Last year’s event saw more than 500 people learn about Whio, better known as the bird on the $10 note. Visitors to this year’s free event will enjoy a sausage sizzle, bouncy castle and face painting along with interactive presentations given by Department of Conservation rangers.
The ever-popular Whio dog will again be in attendance demonstrating his contribution to Whio conservation.
It’s also a great opportunity to check out the newly opened Genesis Energy Freshwater Aquarium.
So pack a picnic, grab the kids and come along for a fun family day out this Saturday.
