Sri Lanka Gifts Nine Pallets of Tea to Christchurch

The Salvation Army is to distribute nine pallets of Dilmah tea bags to quake-affected Christchurch residents thanks to a donation from the Sri Lankan Government.

The gift, which equates to about 325,000 cups of tea, is a donation from the Sri Lankan Government to the Government of New Zealand. The Salvation Army was chosen to distribute the tea to quake-affected Christchurch residents.

Sri Lanka’s Honorary Consul to New Zealand, Aruna Abeygoonesekera, says the gift is particularly appropriate given New Zealand’s support to Sri Lanka following the 2004 tsunami.

Salvation Army Spokesman Major Campbell Roberts says the tea will be an important component to food parcels distributed to Christchurch residents. The Salvation Army is distributing around 300 food parcels a day to quake-affected residents and expects this number to climb as job losses, resulting from the quake, mount.
