BNZ Kickstarts the Canterbury Business Recovery Trust Fund

The first donation to the newly-formed Canterbury Business Recovery Trust Fund - set up to provide much needed financial aid for earthquake stricken businesses in the region - has been made by the Bank of New Zealand.

The BNZ has donated $250,000 into the fund in a move to assist the recovery of the Canterbury business community.

“This is a significant sum of money for a single company to donate for the benefit of Canterbury. It adds to the seed funding of $2.5million announced by the government on Tuesday and we hope others in the private sector will follow suit,” says Canterbury Business Recovery Group spokesperson, Peter Townsend.

“The Bank of New Zealand is supporting this vital initiative,” says BNZ CEO Andrew Thorburn. “We know that business is the lifeblood of any thriving region and our support for the Canterbury Business Recovery Trust Fund will work to meet the needs of those businesses impacted by the quake, plus restore jobs and much needed confidence. I encourage my counterparts and any businesses to support the fund and support the rebuild of Canterbury.”

The Canterbury Business Recovery Trust Fund has been set up by the Canterbury Business Recovery Group to facilitate financial support to earthquake affected businesses. Businesses can access the funds through the www.recovercanterbury.co.nz website or by contacting the recovery call centre on 0800 50 50 96. Each business will need to undertake an assessment with a Business Recovery Coordinator - and some eligibility criteria apply.

“The Fund will be one of a number of ways that the CBRG can assist businesses. By adding private sector donations to the government’s funding we can continue to help businesses through this time. The Bank of New Zealand’s contribution is very gratefully received and is an indication of how the corporate sector values and wants to help the affected business community here” says Townsend.

For more information about the Canterbury Business Recovery Trust Fund and to make a donation visit www.recovercanterbury.co.nz. Applications for funds from the Trust will open on 1st April (once the funds become available) but expressions of interest can be made now via www.recovercanterbury.co.nz or through the call centre on 0800 505096.
