The State Services Commissioner, Iain Rennie, today announced that John Ombler has agreed to act as the acting Chief Executive of the new Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority (CERA), a public service department established for the time it takes to support the recovery. John Ombler is currently the Deputy State Services Commissioner
Iain Rennie said that Mr Ombler has worked in the Public Service for 34 years, twelve of which in senior management positions. Prior to joining the State Services Commission, he was General Manager, Research Development and Improvement in the Department of Conservation, where he worked for 20 years.
“John Ombler has been working closely with Ministers and chief executives across the State Services to establish this agency, he will continue to lead that work as the acting chief executive until I make a permanent appointment.
“John has a clear understanding of the role and the importance of building a strong partnership with local government in Christchurch. He has a strong background in working effectively with a wide range of stakeholders and will establish a sound platform for the incoming permanent chief executive,” Iain Rennie said.
Mr Ombler will start as acting Chief Executive on Wednesday 30 March 2011. The State Services Commissioner will run an accelerated recruitment process for the permanent chief executive, expected to take approximately five weeks.
The Commissioner will be seeking someone with a track record of delivery and a history of building strong relationships. The successful candidate will be based in Canterbury and will be expected to work closely with local government and the community.
Advertisements for the permanent chief executive will begin on Saturday 2 April and the close off period for all applications will be Monday 11 April. The State Services Commissioner will conduct interviews for the position ten days later and will invite representatives from Canterbury to sit on the interview panel.
