Cardrona skier nabs gold at Whistler Cup

The youngest member of the talented freeskiing Wells family has won gold at the prestigious Whistler Cup in Canada.

An outstanding performance at the weekend (April 8-10) from Cardrona Alpine Ski Team athlete Jackson Wells, 11, secured him the top podium spot in the K2 age group in the Kombi (mixed distance between gates) race.

Jackson, the younger brother of leading international freeskiers Jossi and Byron, is the first New Zealander to ever win Gold at the international junior ski event – the largest and most important ski race in North America for athletes aged 11-14 years.

Cardrona Sales and Marketing Manager Nadia Ellis says they are absolutely rapt with Jackson’s win.

“It’s fantastic to see a Kiwi on the podium for the first time in 10 years, and to win gold is brilliant.

“Jackson and his brothers have been training at Cardrona’s High Performance Centre for years now – Jackson pretty much since he started walking,” she says.

“The depth of talent within the Wells family is truly amazing and Jackson has proved himself as an awesome freeskier as well.

“We’re looking forward to seeing them back on Cardrona’s slopes when the Northern Hemisphere season wraps up.”

The Whistler Cup also proved successful for Jackson’s fellow Cardrona Alpine Teammates Elizabeth Reid, 13, who placed 2nd in the Slalom for the K1 age group, and Piera Hudson, 13, placed 4th in the K2 group in Super G.
