Taranaki Man Recognised for 25 Years Service to Coastguard New Zealand

Taranaki man, Laurie Baker will receive a long service award in recognition of his 25-plus years of service to Coastguard New Zealand.

Laurie will be presented with a gold chevron lapel badge by Coastguard CEO Bruce Reid at Coastguard Taranaki’s monthly meeting next Monday 18th April, where he has been involved as a volunteer at the unit for 39 years.

Colin Small, President of Coastguard New Zealand, says, “Coastguard New Zealand is extremely grateful to all those who donate their time and Laurie is an outstanding example of someone who has a real and dedicated passion to the organisation.

“The whole community benefits from the work of our volunteers and we’re thrilled to be able to extend our recognition to those individuals like Laurie with these awards.”

The awards form part of Coastguard’s ‘People First Strategy’, an ongoing commitment by the organisation to the recognition of the many New Zealanders who donate their time and energy to saving lives at sea.

Coastguard is a maritime rescue service made up of trained volunteers who put themselves in harm’s way on a regular basis to ensure the safety of the wider community at sea. Earlier this year, Coastguard celebrated a record number of volunteer hours contributed by its 2,146 volunteers.

“Our community promise is saving lives at sea and this can only be achieved with the help of our Coastguard volunteers and the local community support they receive. We look forward to awarding many more long service awards in the years to come and continuing our efforts to keep all New Zealanders safe on the water,” says Mr Small.
