Mayor Invites Residents to Anzac Day Commemorations in Rotorua
ROTORUA 18.04.11: Rotorua mayor Kevin Winters will host this year’s Anzac Day Civic Memorial Service at the Rotorua Convention Centre at 9.30am on Monday [25 April] and is extending an invitation to residents to join him in honouring New Zealand's servicemen and women.
The service, commemorating the 96th anniversary of the Gallipoli landings by New Zealand and Australian combined military forces, will be held in the Convention Centre’s Civic Theatre, and relayed to a large screen in the Banquet Room.
Last year around 900 people attended the memorial service.
The key address will be given by Liam Walsh and Rebecca Roling from John Paul College, and Reverend Tom Poata will be the officiating minister.
A parade of service personnel, school parties, cadet corps and local community groups will assemble at the Lakefront at the intersection of Whakaue and Fenton Streets at 8.50am to march via Government Gardens to the Convention Centre, arriving at 9.20am ready for the service to begin at 9.30am.
Mayor Winters said he is encouraging locals and any visitors in town to attend the service to acknowledge the heroic efforts of the New Zealand and Australian military forces.
“It’s an important opportunity for people to come together to honour those who have gone before us and to whom we are indebted for the lifestyle and privileges we are able to enjoy in this country today.”
