Cosy Up to a Trout this Easter

(Note to Editors / Reporters - for ‘What’s On’ etc Use)
Come and cuddle a trout! Well, almost...the place to learn all about trout and see them up close is Rotorua is Fish & Game Eastern Region’s Ngongotaha Trout Hatchery – open all weekend - entry free to visitors. The trout hatchery makes a huge contribution to the world renowned Rotorua fishery – raising and releasing 80,000 young trout annually.

The facility’s the perfect place for a family visit – where children (and their parents) can learn about the life cycle of rainbows and brown trout. The historic hatchery building dating back to the 30’s has been modernised and features tanks of trout with interpretive panels telling their story (get the kids to spot the white albino specimen!).

Outdoors, there are trout in rearing pools, and magnificent big rainbows in a natural pool fed by crystal clear stream water. The trout hatchery has walking tracks and a picnic area. It is located on Paradise Valley Road, about 20 minutes north of Rotorua city. Bookings must be made for guided or group tours at other times of the year. Contact the Eastern Fish & Game office, 07-357 5501, email info@erfgc.co.nz, or visit www.fishandgame.org.nz
