Wellingtonians Give $195,000 to Christchurch

Wellingtonians Give $195,000 to Christchurch Via Online Airport Car Parking Donation

$195,400 was donated to the NZ Red Cross Earthquake Appeal in a presentation on Friday following an outstanding response to the Airport’s ‘Give Christchurch 100%’ online parking initiative.

Steven Fitzgerald, Wellington Airport CEO said, “Wellingtonians showed their support for Christchurch by getting behind us when we announced the plan to make the donation. Around double the car park users opted for the online parking option during the promotion as we would usually expect. This demonstrates how keen the people of Wellington are to support this worthy cause and we are very pleased to make a material contribution.”

“The fantastic support of the Red Cross was clearly visible at Wellington Airport in the days after the earthquake, with Red Cross personnel working tirelessly to assist people arriving directly from Christchurch. The work of the Red Cross is now moving to an important phase of assisting families with children who are displaced during the winter months.”

Hayley Presling, Red Cross Team Leader said “Our job in the days immediately following the quake was made so much easier by the amazing support that we received from the Wellington Airport staff, from Senior Management level right through to the ground staff. The airport facilitated a range of activities and everyone was very helpful - the degree of empathy and compassion shown by the Airport staff was incredible.”

“On behalf of New Zealand Red Cross, I'd like to take this opportunity to thank the generous individuals, groups and companies, like Wellington Airport, that have gone to these extraordinary lengths to support the people and communities affected by the Christchurch earthquake. I'd also like to personally thank Wellington Airport on behalf of my team, and the other Red Cross teams who were at the Airport, for their amazing support and assistance over this difficult time. “
