Illegal Fishers Caught at Ohau Channel

Illegal Fishers Caught at Ohau Channel

Fish & Game officers have issued a reminder to anglers over the rules for fishing the Ohau Channel near Rotorua – after two men were caught fishing without licences – and using illegal gear.

Eastern Region Fish & Game Officers intercepted the two 20 year-old local men on Tuesday, May 3rd, 2011.

Regional Compliance Officer Anthony van Dorp says the pair were found near the top of the Channel fishing without licences with spin fishing gear which is illegal – only fly fishing is permitted along the Channel.

The pair face further action from Fish & Game over the two offences, which may include court appearances. Fishing without a licence is punishable with fines of up to $5000, and the pair also had their fishing gear seized, he says.

“Fishers are urged to make themselves completely familiar with the regulations that apply to the spots they are fishing in. There are occasional cases of illegal fishing in the Ohau Channel but anglers are reminded that they must be licensed, and the methods they’re using must be appropriate and legal.”

Autumn has brought the start of the trout spawning season and shoreline fishing is kicking off quite nicely, says Mr van Dorp, but it also does bring cases of people fishing illegally.

He is urging the public to be vigilant around the spawning streams especially and report any illegal fishing they see on 0800 POACHING (762 244). “It is crucial for the fishery that trout are able to spawn without falling prey to illegal fishing methods or poaching - so that a good number of young fish are coming through to replace those being caught.”
