Bright Cyclists Stay Safe Over Winter

Cyclists are being reminded by Auckland Transport to stay safe during the winter months by wearing bright reflective clothing and turning on their bike lights.

Auckland Transport is holding a City Bike Day free breakfast for cyclists at Aotea Square on Thursday to raise the importance of cyclists staying safe by being bright and being seen.

At the breakfast there will be giveaways of reflective gear, spot prizes, bike checks and the opportunity for cyclists to share why they will continue to cycle in winter by entering the City Bike day competition.

Cycling is a great way to stay fit, save money and beat the winter blues, but when cycling in winter, cyclists need to make sure that they are as conspicuous as possible to other road users.

Research has shown that motorists are more likely to see cyclists if they wear a reflective vest coupled with other reflective items such as ankle straps and knee markings. Cyclists relying on fluorescent alone at night could be at risk of not being seen.

Auckland Transport Community Transport Manager Matthew Rednall says the message to cyclists is to be bright, be safe, be seen.

“Cyclists need to ensure they are doing their best to keep safe. By wearing reflective gear and attaching a bike light, cyclists are more visible, and increase their chances to be seen by motorists.

“Motorists too are reminded to look out for cyclists on the road and in the dark”, Mr Rednall says.
