Youth Week 2011

The Stratford District Youth Council has embraced the new Youth Week theme this year (21-29 May 2011). Step Up-Be YOUth is the name and the Youth Council has certainly stepped up to organise another great week of events.

The week will start with a chartered bus on Sunday 22 May to New Plymouth to “Hit the Shops” at Centre City. Tickets are a tiny $3. “Even if you can drive there yourself- this way we can cut down on petrol costs!” states Youth Councilor Rebekah Frost. “I’ll be on that bus!”

Monday 23 May will be see an opportunity for young people in Stratford to attend a youth service at the Baptist Church. This will be a special service run by youth for youth and supper will be served at the end.

“Step Up” will be taken literally on Tuesday 25 May when the Stratford High School Hall will be the venue for a taster Zumba session with trained instructor Natalie Gaston followed by a beginners boxing session from the instructors at the local Lions Den. Both sessions will be a great chance to have a go and absolutely no prior experience is needed.

The events continue on Thursday 26 May when Stratford will be host to its own Youth Expo. The expo has been targeted specifically for 12-24 year olds. There will be a number of stall holders hosting interactive and informative hubs for expo-goers to access information about everything from the new legal responsibilities they face (driving, voting, laws) to the new social cultures that present themselves (safety around alcohol, drugs, sex) and of course the ever changing physicalities of being a teenager (mental, physical , and emotional health). To top it off one lucky expo-goer will win a digital camera just for attending, as well as spot prizes, goodie bags and a giant inflatable twister game. “Teenagers need to have fun and get the info they need at the same time” says Astyn Buckland -Expo Co-organiser and Deputy Chair of the Youth Council
