Face painting and drumming on offer at ‘Rotorua Entertains’ workshops

ROTORUA 16.05.11: Local residents are being encouraged to paint faces and to rock to the beat of drums in preparation for Rotorua’s Rugby World Cup 2011 (RWC2011) celebrations.

Over the past two months Rotorua District Council (RDC) has been coordinating Rotorua Entertains – a series of free workshops aimed at developing talent and performance skills among Rotorua residents.

On Wednesday [18 May] award-winning body artist Sue Colley is hosting a face painting class at Rotorua Arts Village Experience (RAVE), while on Saturday [21 May] musician Darryn Sigley will host the first of three percussion workshops at the Samblasta clubrooms at Scion’s Te Papa Tipu Innovation Park.

RDC community arts officer Kiri Jarden says local and visiting tutors skilled in juggling, stilting, salsa, percussion and face painting have come to the party to ensure locals are ready to entertain the city’s visitors during RWC2011.

“In recent years Rotorua swayed its hips to the rhythms and colour of Jambalaya which brought Brazilian percussion and Latin dancing to town. The event left its mark with local group Samblasta forming around 2005.

“We’re fortunate that Darryn Sigley, an experienced drummer who was schooled in Wellington at the Jazz Conservatorium, has agreed to share his percussion expertise with locals and to offer a hip Latin flavour to our world cup festivities.

“Sue Colley has already hosted successful Rotorua Entertains face painting workshops over the past couple of months. This has resulted in a number of attendees already using their new skills at various local events and feeling confident to face paint the masses over the world cup period.”

More information on the Rotorua Entertains programme is available from the Events & Venues Rotorua website www.eventsandvenues.co.nz/rotoruaentertains and at www.creativerotorua.org.nz.

‘Rotorua Entertains’ is supported by Rotorua Trust, REAL New Zealand Festival and Rotorua District Council.
