Hundreds due at NZSO concerts in Huntly

Hundreds of young people will experience live classical music by players of the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra this month when an NZSO ensemble returns to Huntly College for a third consecutive year.

Seventeen NZSO players are coming to Huntly on May 26 courtesy of Solid Energy to perform two schools concerts, with more than 700 seats already booked in advance.

The ensemble includes players from all the sections in the orchestra, including brass, woodwind, percussion and string instruments.

The concerts provide a unique opportunity for local young people to be introduced to each instrument and to hear pop tunes and familiar classical pieces performed by world-class New Zealand musicians.

The audience also gets the chance to take part in a section of the concert called “Huntly’s Got Talent”, which last year saw students playing flute, trombone, drums, guitar and even the recorder alongside the NZSO.

In addition to the schools concerts, an NZSO chamber ensemble will perform at a free community concert sponsored by Solid Energy on 25 May, after a similar event last year attracted more than 200 people.

“Solid Energy is very pleased to bring performances by members of the NZSO to Huntly. They are world class and this is a unique opportunity for students and the community. We are thrilled to support having members of the NZSO perform locally,” says Solid Energy Chief Operating Officer Barry Bragg.

NZSO Chief Executive Peter Walls says the NZSO is delighted to return to Huntly to entertain local young people and their families.

“It’s an absolute pleasure for our players to share their love of music with the people of Huntly, who always lay on a warm and enthusiastic welcome. We hope they enjoy the concerts as much we do!”

Free Community Concert: 6.50-8pm on Wednesday 25 May, Huntly College Hall. Places are limited for this free concert so RSVP by 20 May to info@solidenergy.co.nz or 0800-825-322. Parking off Harris St entrance only.

Schools Concerts: School students only, on Thursday 26 May at 11am and 1pm.
