Jam and Cheese Bound in an Asian Style Anyone?

Jam and Cheese Bound in an Asian Style Anyone?

Wellington June 2

So what’s hot at HANDMADE? Seems people want to learn about jam-making, how to make cheese, soap and oriental bookbinding.

These are among some of the classes that have sold out – or nearly sold out – at the inaugural event celebrating all things HANDMADE in Wellington this weekend.

“One of the full day jewellery workshops has also sold out,” says HANDMADE creator, Melanie Walker.

“And although we knew the first year would probably attract more women I am pleased to say the men have shown up as well with beer making, preserves, making a wooden sorter box and some of the masterclasses popular with the males,” says Melanie.

About 20% of classes sold have been part of HANDMADE weekend passes which give people a choice of up to eight classes with a discount.

“The beauty of it is that people can come to a couple of things or fill their weekend – which they’ve done,” says Melanie.

“I think this is a reflection of the two different types of people we are attracting – those with a definite idea of what they want to do and those who just want to experience as many different classes on offer as they can across the weekend.”

“And some people have bought tickets to the Meet the Makers & Pop Up Store Party, to meet the HANDMADE experts teaching and speaking and buy the items they make and sell.”

Tickets to HANDMADE are on sale online right up to the event and then will be available at Te Papa for some activities during the event itself.

Melanie says that planning for HANDMADE 2012 is already underway with a call for teachers and classes to be released soon after this inaugural HANDMADE.
