New pocket guide covers everything you need to know about the Redwoods and forest tracks
ROTORUA 03.06.11: A major transformation of forest recreation information leaflets and maps has resulted in the material being updated and combined into a single new comprehensive publication - ‘The Redwoods, Whakarewarewa Forest Recreation Guide’.
Rotorua District Council’s Redwoods Forest & Visitor Centre manager Julianne Wilkinson says feedback from visitors had identified the need for more comprehensive information about the forest and in a format that they could take away with them.
“Multisporters in particular were interested in a single map that showed all types of tracks, instead of having to carry around two or three different versions.

“The new guide provides more information to users about the forest so they have a better overall appreciation of what the forest is about and what opportunities are available. Combining walking, horse riding and mountain biking information will make users more aware of each other and encourage them to share with care
“We’ve divided the forest into sections within the guide, including zoomed in maps, bike profiles and a full forest fold-out map to aid navigation,” says Ms Wilkinson.
Replacement of maps and signs within the forest and at main entry points, and an upgrade of track markers, will follow shortly.
The Redwoods, Whakarewarewa Forest Recreation Guide costs $6.50 and will be available from next week at The Redwoods Gift Shop & Visitor Centre, Rotorua i-SITE and various outlets around Rotorua.
Profits from the guide will support maintenance of tracks and facilities in the forest, including a funding grant to Rotorua Mountain Bike Club for seasonal track maintenance work.
