Instamatic Moments: Petra Stueben.

6 - 11 JUNE 2011

Instamatic Moments: Petra Stueben.

petra stueben.jpgOPENING: 6.00 - 8.00pm Monday 6 June.

OPEN: 10.00am - 2.00pm and 4.00 - 6.00pm Tuesday - Saturday.

In this exhibition I display photographs from the '60s and '70s that I took as a child growing up in Central Europe. They were kept in an old family album, which travelled with me to New Zealand,

For this exhibition I took the album apart, selected some photographs, enlarged them 1 to 12 and arranged them in a different order. These photos can be seen as documents of their time and also the technical standard of the medium. The first part of the exhibitions title 'Instamatic' refers to this. The enlargement and the rearrangement links the 'moment' of observation into a contemporary timeframe. Questioning these images how far they are able to differentiate themselves from being merely a relic of a family photo album and how far they are able to bridge the past with the present time by leaving their individual character of origin behind, was what I seeked to explore.

CREATAVISION & MUSART REVISITED: CLINTON HERDMAN & BRIAN OMUNDSEN.

clinton herdman.jpgOPEN: 9.00am - 6.00pm daily.

Creatavision is a partnership of Artist-Clinton Herdman, and Musician-Brian Omundsen. They have worked, performed and brought their artistic talents to the people of NZ for over 25 years.

In 2006/2007 they went on tour in NZ with a project that directly combined the talents of both, under the umbrella of Musart (Mus(ic and)art = Musart). The collaboration took the form of an album and artwork. Brian Omundsen wrote, performed and recorded in his home studio an album of originals, and artist Clinton Herdman worked alongside and created 10 large and stunning originals linked to each of the songs.

The album (a CD of 11 originals) expresses experiences, people met, thoughts & feelings as one would expect from any songwriter. The songs encompass blues, light jazz, ballads and more. They are performed on an array of instruments including drums, bass, guitars, keyboards, synths and of course saxophone, harmonicas and layered vocals (Brian's specialist instruments). The artwork is a visual symphony of the music and lyrics of the songs. Done in rich coloured pastels and using a strong combination of real and surreal, detail and form.

The exhibit will include 5 of the originals from the Musart - Reachout tour (1.3m x 1m framed colour pastels), prints, books and CDs (with CD players available to hear the music). Also to be featured in the exhibit is a selection of Clinton's other artworks past & present. Included are his most recent carvings in Oamaru Stone, plaster reproductions of some of his most popular pieces, oil originals and more.
