Canterbury earthquake, 1pm 13 June: Telecom

Media Statement: Canterbury earthquake, 1pm 13 June

Telecom is working intensively to understand which services have been affected by today’s big aftershock.

Overall, our networks have continued to operate well.

Both the fixed and mobile networks are experiencing some congestion, and mains power loss may be affecting some parts of the network.

Telecom is therefore asking mobile customers to use text messages in place of calls where possible, as call volumes remain high.

While immediately following the earthquake 3 cellsites went down due to loss of power, all of these sites are now operable.

Our thoughts are with the people of Canterbury.
