YMCA Tauranga Finally Shows its Web Spirit

MEDIA RELEASE FOR IMMEDIATE USE

YMCA Tauranga Finally Shows its Web Spirit

It may have taken two years to tick off the to-do list but the YMCA Tauranga can finally say it has a new website.

Joining forces with local website company, MOCA Web Creations, and design partners, Woods Creative, the Y went live last Friday with its brand new site at www.ymcatauranga.org.nz.

“I’m absolutely thrilled with the end product,” said YMCA CEO Amy Thaler. “Websites are such an important tool to have these days and they can say so much about your organisation. Considering that the majority of our participants are youth, it was vital that we modernised our website to reflect the spirit of our Y today.”

Developing the website also proved a fantastic opportunity for learning and community collaboration. Web company Cucumber donated their expertise to develop the website’s initial requirements and assisted with vendor selection. Bay of Plenty Polytechnic students Amit Ashok Kamble and Lokesh Attarde then assisted the team at MOCA the practical production.

“Working with MOCA was a very rewarding experience,” Thaler noted. “They took the time to understand our business and were able to effectively build a great website. Nothing was ever a hassle for them. They also came to the table as a long-term partner in our community business. They saw the value in establishing a strong partnership with the YMCA Tauranga. This wasn’t just about a one-off project for them.”

Using the contemporary colour scheme the YMCA Tauranga adopted during a rebranding campaign in 2009, the new website comes to life with playful language, simple yet effective design, and vibrant photos taken from its many programmes.

It also features an easy-to-use online booking system for parents enrolling their children on holiday programmes, direct feeds to the YMCA’s Facebook page, copies of its revamped newsletters and easy access to everyday forms. Visitors to the site can also donate to the YMCA’s named endowment fund with the Acorn Foundation.

When asked why the new website took so long, Thaler noted that building a website was very similar to constructing a house with the potential for cost-blowouts, time delays and poor artistic decisions.

“Having completed the renovation of the Y’s home on Devonport Road in 2009 on-time and on-budget, I was nervous about taking on another major project like a website,” she explained. “I didn’t want to get it wrong!”

About YMCA Tauranga

To us, it’s all about showing your spirit. Ask yourself, when was the last time you showed yours?

Most people hold tightly onto theirs, often too shy to release it. Some people let their spirit run wild, and sometimes have to rein it in- and we meet tonnes of people who have just never been shown how to find theirs. You also get the occasional person who reckons they are just saving their spirit for later.

At the YMCA we work with people to help find their spirit, so they can make the most of their experience and unleash their potential on the world around them.
