Kiwi’s Continue Doing Their Thing Thanks to AMP
Now in its 13th year, the long term results of the past 12 AMP Scholarship Programmes continue to shine as past recipients keep doing their thing.
Blair Vernon, AMP General Manager, is delighted but not surprised to see previous AMP Scholarship recipients excelling in their fields.
“Kiwis are continuing to raise the bar and are such a source of inspiration and validation for AMP, as they provide us with clear evidence that these scholarships really are helping Kiwis to do their thing”, he says.
2010 AMP Inaugural Study Start Scholarship Recipient Shana Llorando
• Shana’s thing is writing and performing music
• In May 2011, Shana released her first single ‘Tomorrow’ and participated in NZ Music Month for the first time
• On Saturday June 18 2011, Shana was announced the Smokefree Rockquest Regional Final Winner and is now in the process of creating a 15 minute performance video in order to secure her place in the Smokefree Rockquest National Finals.

• Tony’s thing is creating ukulele’s
• In April 2011 at Michigan Theatre, he took centre stage at a Stooges Ron Asheton Benefit gig when one of his handmade guitars was used on stage by James Williamson and Iggy Pop, as pictured here by David Dominic Jr.
2009 AMP Regional Scholarship Recipient Pera Durie
• Pera’s thing is short film making
• His short film, ‘Warbrick’, was named Best Short Film at the 2009 Wairoa Maori Film Festival, is the 10th film to be hosted on Stuff during its short film season.
• The film, which is based on the true story of the 1888-1889 New Zealand Natives rugby tour of Great Britain, was selected due to its relevance to the upcoming Rugby World Cup, acting as an inspirational tool.
• In 2011, and his short film ‘Warbrick’ has been selected for screening at Stuff.co.nz’s annual Short Film Festival.
Applications for the 2011 AMP Scholarship Programme have now closed, however voting is open for the AMP People’s Choice Award, with 1099 applicants now in the running for the chance to receive the coveted $10,000 People’s Choice Award.
The People’s Choice recipient will be determined by public vote at www.doyourthing.co.nz, so AMP urge New Zealanders to get online and vote for the next shining Kiwi to do their thing.
To date, the AMP Scholarships Programme has awarded more than $1.2 million worth of scholarships to 112 Kiwis who have been doing great things. AMP is gearing up to help even more Kiwis this year, and with People’s Choice, Kiwis can do their part too.
