Taita Children Launch Project Sunshine
Taita Children Launch Project Sunshine
One of
the Hutt Valley’s busiest Community-led developments,
Great Start House Taita, launched a new community project
designed by children on Saturday 2 July.
“Project Sunshine” was designed by the Great Start Taita children’s gardening club. The club has, in the past, planted hundreds of sunflower seedlings through the streets for to make Taita more beautiful, at the same time as promoting awareness of what residents can do to encourage the honey bee population. The project supports residents to build connections with each-other and with their physical environment and become aware of the plight of bees.
Project Sunshine was formally launched when twenty volunteers from the United Nations Association visited the Great Start Taita House to do voluntary work in the community. The youth volunteers have been in Wellington for the model United Nations. Their voluntary work provided an experience of work in a local community, to complement their learning about global issues.
The youth were asked to take Taita's sunflower seeds and work with children in their own communities to plant them.
