Training the trainers
A group of 20 cycle advocates now have their training wheels, so to speak.
The group has begun a “Train the Trainer” course which will make them qualified to teach cycle skills programmes in schools and the wider community. It is an NZQA approved course.
The two days of practical and theoretical exercises were hosted by Auckland Transport and run in association with the New Zealand Transport Agency and Bike NZ.
It was the first course of its kind in the region. Among those attending were representatives from the Police, cycle advocacy groups, secondary schools cycling coaches and individuals interested in cycle training in the community.
“There is an increasing number of cyclists on our roads and as a result the number of injuries and fatalities is increasing, “ says Kitch Cuthbert from Auckland Transport. “So it is important that people are properly trained, by qualified people, before they venture onto the road.”
