Redcliffs class supports
France
Students and teachers at Redcliffs primary
school aren’t letting the fact that their school is
damaged and that there are no matches being held in
Christchurch stop them from getting into the spirit of Rugby
World Cup 2011.
Currently based at neighbouring Sumner
primary school, Redcliffs is one of the first schools to
take up the challenge put to them by the Christchurch City
Council and Classic Hits to ‘Adopt a Second Team’, with
France their chosen country to support.
Rose
McInerny, year three teacher at Redcliffs, says they were
inspired to adopt France because of its talented rugby team
and the awesome things to discover about the
country.
“We’re learning about France at the
moment – the people, the landmarks, the language and the
food. We’re planning on having a cultural day complete
with French food and we may even make flags and uniforms
too.
“We have quite a few boys who play rugby in our
class and a lot of the children are extremely excited about
Rugby World Cup 2011.”
Christchurch City Council
Marketing Manager Richard Stokes says this competition,
which will run during RWC 2011 from 9 September to 23
October, is a great way to involve children in the spirit of
the Tournament and to encourage them to learn about a
different country at the same time.
“Classes can
support another team by holding a themed day with food and
costumes, decorate the classroom in the colours from the
adopted team’s country, invite speakers from that country
or hold an opening ceremony event with all countries
represented.
“They can do whatever they like as long
as they have some fun and feel connected to the rest of the
country as we host the biggest sporting event in our
history.”
Education providers need to fill in the
online registration form by Monday 22 August. They can then
enter the competition each week during RWC 2011 by sending
in photos of their classrooms and activity to
rugby@classichits.co.nz.
A winning classroom will be
picked by the Classic Hits team each week and will receive a
gourmet in-class-breakfast. The winning school will be named
at the end of RWC 2011 and will receive breakfast for the
entire school and a prize that will be presented to the
school by Jason Gunn and Dave Fitzgerald from Classic
Hits.
All Christchurch schools (primary and
intermediate) have been invited to ‘Adopt a Second Team’
and join in the festivities of RWC 2011. For more
