Danger on Ralph Road

18 August 2011

Danger on Ralph Road

Motorists are removing warning signs and driving over a collapsed culvert on Ralph Road near Huntly to avoid a short detour.

General manager roading and projects Ian Gooden says continued use is compounding the problem, which was initially aggravated by high water levels and excessive rainfall.

“Removing the temporary warning signs and driving over an unstable road surface is dangerous and irresponsible.

“Considering the marked detour to Huntly will add around a minute to the journey, it’s just not worth the risk,” he said.

High water levels are also preventing the necessary repairs to the section of Ralph Road near East Mine Road where the culvert structure has been progressively collapsing.

Waikato District Council will replace the culverts and repair the road as soon as water levels recede to a level where this is possible.
