need to remove nasty plant
Spring has finally sprung which means it is now time for residents to keep an eye out for weeds. Hot on the radar for Horizons Regional Council is Woolly Nightshade, and staff will be aiming to wipe it out as part of the Wanganui Urban Weed Programme.
Woolly Nightshade has caused a real nuisance in other parts of New Zealand including Northland, Auckland, Taranaki and Nelson. Horizons is working with the public to prevent its potential spread to all parts of Wanganui.
Woolly Nightshade is an easily recognisable plant which can grow into a tree taller than a house in only a few years. It has large soft light green leaves, small purple flowers and green and yellow berries. There are also some potential health risks associated with Woolly Nightshade.
“The tiny hairs covering the plant can cause asthma like symptoms and all parts of the plant are poisonous and stink like kerosene,” says Horizons Environmental Management Officer, Neil Gallagher.
Horizons Regional Council wants to help the public to identify and remove Woolly Nightshade to ensure it does not take hold. Horizons Urban Weed Programme is targeting this weed prior to Christmas so if residents have seen Woolly Nightshade growing on or near their properties they can call 0508 800 800 and Horizons will respond.
“Our team at Horizons will make a huge effort to control this plant in Wanganui city, and the public can help us by calling Horizons and letting us know where to find it. Woolly Nightshade is a real pest and we want to take action. ”
People can visit www.horizons.govt.nz or free phone Horizons on 0508 800 800 for more information on how to identify Woolly Nightshade and for assistance in removing it.
