Youthline reaches out to travellers coming to New Zealand for the Rugby World Cup (RWC)!
Kia ora
The RWC has arrived and with the influx of travellers visiting cities and towns around New Zealand, Youthline is urging communities to take care of one another and those visiting.
Not only will they be taking in our beautiful country and some great games of rugby, but there will be much celebrating at social events, which in some cases may result in over indulging of alcohol, drugs and potentially even unwanted sexual encounters.
Youthline often finds that at times of celebration there
is also an increase in people requiring someone to talk to,
and with so many coming from overseas and being far away
from their normal support network of close family and
friends, there is the high likelihood that some people may
feel very isolated and alone.
Youthline’s Clinical
Services Manager Glenda Schnell comments “Ideally we
won’t be needed, but if we are we’re only a text away
and we can be there listening and encouraging, backing up
the spirit of the games so that all get home safely”.
Youthline has been working with young people from many different cultures for over 40 years and is a provider of support in times of crisis and need. We currently manage over 400,000 incoming requests annually and with the addition of our popular free text service (on text 234) are reaching thousands of young people each year.
Youthline has approached Backpackers around the Auckland region and further afield to advise of our services and also to provide a means of supporting travellers that will be here over the next few months. So we wish that all have fun and celebrate whilst enjoying the Rugby but to be safe and remember we’re here to talk.
GO THE ALL BLACKS!!!
