NZ Body Art Launch A Colouful Affair

NZ Body Art Launch A Colouful Affair

The incredible Rendezvous Hotel was the site for the NZ Body Art Awards 2011 media launch last week.

Guests in attendance were treated to models that were painted in a selection of rugby jerseys from 1905 through to present. The works during the event were crafted by some of the contestants past and present in – Caroline Viesnik, Sandi Cutts, Magdalena O’Conner, Alison Butcher and Jane Ellis.

The media launch also saw key figures deliver speeches; figures not solely part of the body art world either…

Mayor Len Brown exclaimed his disappointment that he would not be able to attend the awards on October 1; as they take place the same date as his 55th birthday! Explaining that he won’t get a chance to leave on a day he’ll be spending with family, he could not be tempted to attend in his birthday suit! The mayor then sang “Te Aroha, te whakapono”, with back up from some of the models involved this year’s awards.

Bringing the awards into the heart of Auckland was also touched upon by the event’s artistic director Duane Whickman-Evans. “Moving into the city was a big step and a challenge too because it had set itself a very good foundation over on the North Shore. But as we know, good things need to grow and this is our opportunity to grow. And what a year to grow in."

This year’s ceremony takes place Saturday 1st October 2011 at the ASB Theatre, Aotea Centre, THE EDGE
